The Original Review

GameSpot — Phil Owen
Rated: 8/10 · Published:
“Skeleton Crew is a fun, endearing adventure story that would probably serve as a great introduction to Star Wars for elementary school-aged kids.”

Let's run the numbers, because GameSpot certainly didn't. Skeleton Crew is an eight-episode season. GameSpot's review is based, by its own disclosure, on the first three. That's 37.5% of the show, converted into a confident 8/10 and published on premiere day, December 2, 2024. Statistically speaking, this is a poll of three people with a margin of error the size of the Outer Rim. If a student answered three questions on an eight-question exam and the teacher wrote '8/10, great job' in permanent ink, we would not call that grading. We would call that astrology with a rubric.

Now examine the pull quote, because it's a load-bearing statistical crime: the show 'would probably serve as a great introduction to Star Wars for elementary school-aged kids.' Probably. There is a hedge word inside the thesis statement of a review that ends in a hard numeric score. You cannot put 'probably' in the sentence and 8/10 in the box. That's like a weather forecast that says '70% chance of rain, also it is definitely raining, score: 8.' Pick a confidence interval and live in it, Phil. A point estimate with no error bars is not a verdict, it's a vibe wearing a lab coat.

And the extrapolation problem is not theoretical. Television seasons are famously back-loaded: the finale is where Star Wars shows traditionally either stick the landing or fold into the tarmac. Scoring episodes one through three is measuring a rollercoaster by the part where you're still being ratcheted up the first hill. GameSpot has now done the watch-a-fraction-score-the-whole routine so many times across Disney's TV catalog that their reviews section functions less like criticism and more like a sampling method a stats professor would use as a cautionary slide. At this rate they'll review the next season off the poster's aspect ratio.

Here's the kicker: Skeleton Crew's back half might have been great. It might have been terrible. GameSpot's 8/10 has no idea, because GameSpot's 8/10 was filed before five-eighths of the evidence existed. That's not a review of a show; that's a review of a trailer with a runtime problem. Extrapolating a season score from three episodes is measuring the ocean with a ruler made of soup. The math aint mathing.
