The Original Review

GameSpot — Mason Downey
Rated: 8/10 · Published:
“Noah Hawley's take on the world of Alien is as unsettling as it is captivating, making it easy to overlook the occasional stumble in pacing or the moments where its ambitions outpace its execution.”

Let's run the numbers. Eight episodes in the season. Five episodes watched. Five divided by eight is 0.625. GameSpot published a definitive 8/10 verdict on a dataset with 37.5% of the observations missing, which in any other field would get your study retracted and your lab keys confiscated. This is like grading a bridge by walking five-eighths of the way across it and mailing in your certificate of structural integrity from mid-air. The math aint mathing.

Here's what makes the sample size extra spicy: the missing 37.5% is the ENDING. Statistically speaking, the final act is where sci-fi television goes to die — it's the region of the graph where Lost lives, where Game of Thrones season 8 lives, where entire fanbases have been buried in unmarked graves. Reviewing an ALIEN property while skipping the final act is a franchise-specific crime. The entire mythology of Alien is 'everything was fine until the last stretch of the voyage.' This review is the crew of the Nostromo filing a five-star mission report while the cargo hold is still unopened.

Now let's autopsy the actual sentence GameSpot printed: the show is so captivating it's 'easy to overlook the occasional stumble in pacing or the moments where its ambitions outpace its execution.' A reviewer publicly announcing that they overlooked flaws is an accountant announcing they rounded to the nearest million. Those overlooked stumbles are DATA POINTS, Mason. You don't get to observe defects, declare them invisible, and then hand out an 8 like it's a participation ribbon at a facehugger convention. An 8/10 with three unobserved episodes carries an error bar wider than the Nostromo's landing gear — the honest score here is somewhere between a 4 and a 10, which is not a score, it's a shrug wearing a number costume.

And the final insult to numerical dignity: the review opens by calling the show 'a bold new spin on the franchise formula' and then the verdict box concludes it's 'a bold new spin on a franchise formula.' That's the same sentence measured twice, which I suppose is fitting — this review recycles its own conclusion at a higher rate than it watched the actual show. GameSpot has been scoring partial seasons like a pollster calling elections after five states, and the streak continues. Five out of eight episodes, eight out of ten score, zero out of ten methodology.
