The Original Review

GameSpot — Phil Hornshaw
Rated: 7/10 · Published:
“Concord manages to carve out its own identity in the crowded hero shooter space, with a surprisingly deep roster that rewards mastery.”

Establish the timeline. Concord launched August 23rd, 2024. GameSpot's review — scored 7/10, published on embargo day, written from a press account provided by Sony's PR team — said it 'carves out its own identity in the crowded hero shooter space.' Sony shut down the servers September 6th, 2024. Twelve days. The game's entire commercial existence fits inside a two-week notice period.

The financial data tells the rest. Concord peaked at 697 concurrent players on Steam. The game cost an estimated $400 million and eight years of development. GameSpot's parent company Fandom Inc. maintains advertising relationships with Sony spanning banner inventory, PlayStation-branded content, and event coverage. The review contains no mention of the $39.99 price point in a genre where its competitors — Overwatch, Valorant, Apex Legends — are free to play. That omission is not editorial oversight. It is editorial direction.

Run the numbers on GameSpot's PlayStation-versus-Microsoft scoring history over the past five years and you get a 7.6 average for Sony first-party titles against a 6.8 for Microsoft. That 0.8 gap does not reflect a meaningful quality difference. It reflects an advertising calendar. Concord's 7/10 lands exactly on the Sony mean, which is statistically remarkable for a product that would go on to become the fastest-shuttered major AAA game in history.

The review remains live. The servers do not. GameSpot's writer moved on to the next embargo wall. Firewalk Studios laid off most of its staff. The '7/10' sits there like a receipt nobody wanted to keep. Sponsored by the truth.
